This is not your grandpa’s antique store. Since first opening their dearly missed midcentury modern furniture story, Area, in 2007, shop owners Mark Pei and Travis Flazer have been providing Honolulu with a much-needed commodity: everyday style. They’ve since turned their attentions to a more specific curation of vintage oddities for the home with Hound & Quail, now in a new location on Nuʻuanu Avenue in Chinatown, Honolulu—wholesale lifestyle items to make your apartment, your outfit, or your day just a little bit better.
We stopped by the shop to talk to Mark and Travis and picked out a few things we thought you ought to see.
This Big Island micro-colony honey in two flavors: Mauka and Makai.
“It’s small batch. They found honey in the Egyptian pyramids so we wanted to carry some. It’s also rad that they have completely different flavor profiles, Mauka vs Makai”
This handmade canvas and leather apothecary bag with an embossed Hound and Quail logo.
“An everyday essential – quintessential HQ aesthetic. Durable, handsome, and timeless.”
This 1930s large format land camera complete with original wooden tripod.
“An exercise in scale, fantastic alternative to a houseplant.”
This terrifyingly cool taxidermy badger.
“We like animals! Living or dead. Most of our taxidermy are antiques.”
For the traveling scribbler/writer on-the-go, these exclusive Field Notes notebooks in various colors and styles.
“We are fans of writing stuff down. It makes thoughts and ideas real, visual, tangible. Field Notes are a great size, they it in your pocket and are perfectly portable.”
These assorted minerals and crystals (also available in lapel-pin form).
“Semiprecious superstitions.”
These vintage 1950s clip-on bow-ties (perfect for prom night).
“Dress up once in a while. It’s fun!”
Our product picks are great, but the real beauty of Hound and Quail is in its arrangement. So here, have a look for yourself.
